Canon D30 digital reflex camera test at Paganella Bike, Andalo
  Thanks to Canon Italia kindness, I tested the Canon D30, the last Canon digital reflex camera. I tested the Canon D30 during a race of the Italian Mountain Bike Championship, in Andalo from May 26th to May 27th; following you find some personal comments.

For the test, Canon lent to me the following:

  • D30 digital reflex camera with IBM Microdrive 1Gb.
  • Lens EF 14mm F2.8 L USM.
  • Lens EF 28-70mm f2.8 L USM.
  • Lens EF 70/200mm f2.8 L USM.
  • Lens EF 300mm f2.8 L IS USM.

Due to the focal extension factor (1.6 in Canon D30), the effective focal I used where the following (if compared with 35mm format):

  • 14mm = 22mm.
  • 28-70mm = 45-112mm.
  • 70-200mm = 112-320mm.
  • 300mm = 480mm.

The first impression when you take the camera on your hands is to handle a real reflex; except for the 1.8 inches display mounted on the back of the camera and for a few special commands (like the white balancing), it seams a traditional reflex.

When you take shots, the camera works like a traditional camera: due to the speed of 3 images per second (max 8 images without stop) you can use it for sport reportages also.

Following the Canon instructions, I recorded the images in "jpg large" format directly in the camera memory card, creating a 2Mb file for each picture at a 2160x1440 pixel wide. Thanks to the large amount of memory available in the memory card, I worked for two days using only half of the available memory. Thanks to the PCMCIA adapter for the IBM Microdrive, I quickly downloaded all the images from the memory to the notebook without any software.

Canon mounted on the camera the supplementary grip with an extra space for batteries, so I worked for two days without any problem about battery consumption.

The only thing I didn't like of the camera was the built-in flash: with the 28-70mm lens I noted a shadow on the picture because of the lens length (that is a bit short, anyway...); I think that the built-it flash may be useful only with shorter lenses.

The pictures you find on the bottom of the page are made during the two day with the Canon D30 camera; I applied only the following alterations to the original files:

  • 90 degrees rotation for portrait pictures;
  • resampling of the picture to obtain the maximum side 400 pixel long, 72 ppi and bicubic resampling;
  • saving in jpg format, quality 6 and standard line to limit file size to no more than 50Kb.

I want to thank Canon Italia (Alberto Czajkowski and Ivano Dal Corso first of all) and all the Paganella Bike staff in Andalo (especially Mario Facchini) for their valued support.
